Teen-Scene, a week long summer program was created to help our students improve their social, problem solving and stress management skills. We feel the best way for our students to master these vital life skills is by providing them with highly structured learning environments.
The Teen-Scene summer 2012 program will accept students between the ages of 12-16 with a diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Delay (PDD) – Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). These individuals are typically referred to as those with high functioning Autism or Aspergers.
Teen-Scene is best suited for the following student types:
- Public school attendees
- Those with an academic aide but with no history of aggressive or disruptive behaviors.
- Students that can work in group settings, which do not require one-to-one support
- Individuals that would benefit from direct instruction and support to further develop conversational ability, awareness and respect of others opinions, flexibility in social situations, broadening of their social interests and managing interpersonal situations
- Those in need of building mechanisms to manage their anxiety, stress and problem solving capabilities
- Students in need of improved time management skills
The Teen-Scene Summer 2012 Admissions/Registration procedure will be as follows:
(8 spots are available)
- Complete The Teen-Scene Summer Admissions application.
- Email completed form to Ktodd@turningpointeaf.org
- Each application will be reviewed by the Director of Teen Scene, Robin Shipley
- All Applicants will be contacted before May 30, 2012 for the final decision via email.
Teen-Scene is a fun adventure in the learning process of your child! Students will work in groups developing conversation, team building, collaboration and interaction with others. We will help our teens develop strategies to contend with difficulties stemming from stressful situations and challenge them to reference others and learn the nuances of nonverbal social cues. We will work towards their goals by programming a variety and fun filled week including.
- Low stress activities and sports with an emphasis on team o Art and craft activities
- Team building projects
- Developing a short video on being a teen in 2012!
We strongly encourage parents to develop their tool box of supports for their teen and as a result developed a parent workshop series that allows parents to explore the various strategies and supports that help them support their teens with ASD/Aspergers.
